THE DENVER TENNIS CLUB: A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Founded in 1928, the Denver Tennis Club is the city's oldest. The club was formed by the merger of the Capital and Emerson Tennis Clubs.

Thirty four active members purchased the property from the widow of Mr. John Campion, a wealthy mine owner from Leadville, for the price of $1,365.00.

As President of the DTC for 23 years, Mr. E. L. Griffey was instrumental in building the club into a leading tennis destination. His profession as as a tailor was evidenced by his dress on the court of white flannel shorts and red suspenders. He was an active player until 81 years of age.

The Denver Tennis Club has continued to be an important club to the Colorado tennis community, hosting two of the premier tournaments in the Intermountain area. It has hosted the Denver City Open for decades and more recently added the Denver Junior City Open tennis tournaments to its schedule. The club also hosts several USTA team championships and many players who compete in national and international tennis competitions.
