The Denver Tennis Club was formed by the merger of the Capital and Emerson Tennis Clubs. Thirty-four active members purchased the property from the widow of Mr. John Campion, a wealthy mine owner from Leadville, for the price of $1,365.00. Then President of the DTC, Mr. E. L. Griffey was instrumental in building the club into a leading tennis destination. His profession as a tailor was evidenced by his dress on the court of white flannel shorts and red suspenders.
