The Denver Tennis Club was formed by the merger of the Capital and Emerson Tennis Clubs. Thirty-four active members purchased the property from the widow of Mr. John Campion, a wealthy mine owner from Leadville, for the price of $1,365.00. Then President of the DTC, Mr. E. L. Griffey was instrumental in building the club into a leading tennis destination. His profession as a tailor was evidenced by his dress on the court of white flannel shorts and red suspenders. He was president for 23 years and an active player until 81 years of age.
